This is the login page for Yahoo Mail. Yahoo is one of the world’s largest internet companies. The crown jewel of the company is the Yahoo search portal. Founded by Jerry Yang and David Filo in 1994, it started as a web directory, using human input to organize and categorize the web. It was the most accurate search engine on the web for a while, and the company used its rising stock to acquire a variety of businesses, and today, it owns a large variety of online assets, including Yahoo Maps, Jobs, Personals, Autos, Real Estate, and so on. However, Yahoo’s growth plateaued, and then declined, following the arrival of Google.
Google used a diametrically opposite strategy from Yahoo, using automated algorithms to rank and order web pages. Google’s central innovation was to use the number of links leading to a website as a measure of the website’s relevance and importance. This was known as a site’s PageRank. Of course, to find out the number of links leading to a website, Google had to effectively index the entire web, a non-trivial engineering problem. However, its innovation led to far more accurate and relevant search results, and its growth skyrocketed above that of other search portals. In addition to its user growth, Google was also far more profitable per ad served compared to other search portals. Instead of serving the highest-paid first, it served the most-clicked ad first, reasoning that this was the ad that readers found most useful. In other words, Google emphasized on serving readers and users over advertisers, which was not the norm among the other search portals, which considered the advertisers as their primary customer base. This emphasis on visitors rather than advertisers was a byproduct of Google’s startup status, but eventually served it well.
In 2000, Yahoo threw in the towel and began to pay Google to route its searches through Google’s search engine. Since the arrival of Google, Yahoo’s market capitalization has collapsed, while Google’s stock has rocketed upwards.
